The City of Golden is located at the edge of the foothills of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The city was founded in 1859 during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush as a mining camp and it was named Golden City originally in honor of Thomas Golden. Golden is now home to The Colorado School of Mines, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the National Earthquake Information Center, Coors Brewing Company and the Colorado Railroad Museum. It is also the birthplace of Jolly Rancher candy. In 2010 the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the population to be 18,867. Golden is located just north of I-70, west of Denver at the foot of the Rocky Mountains.
